This local campaign is designed to educate smokers
about the impact their discarded cigarette butts have on the
environment and the aesthetic quality of our beaches.
To encourage beach-going smokers to keep their butts off the
beach, Surfrider volunteers recently handed out empty film
canisters to be used as receptacles for cigarette butts. The
volunteers received a warm reception from smokers who agreed
to place their cigarette butts into the canisters and dispose
of them properly.
This initiative has experienced success in countries
such as Australia, and we hope that it will catch on here
too.
We are waiting to hear back from the Town of
Babylon for the ok to put a bucket of canisters at the gated
entrance to Gilgo beach, so people can take canisters on their
own.
