PIPING PLOVER STEWARDSHIP

Each spring, two plover and tern biology and management training workshops are conducted jointly by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, The Nature Conservancy, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, and the Krusos Foundation.

Volunteers learn about piping plover biology and behavior, habitat, plover population recovery, monitoring techniques, data collection, and more.

BEACHES ARE FOR PLOVERS TOO!

The threatend piping plover is protected by the Endangered Species Act. It nests and rears its young on beaches from Main to North Carolina and needs your help to survive.

• Repect posted signs alerting you to areas where they may inhabit•

• Keep pets leashed

• Leave NO TRASH to attrack hungary predators

PIPING PLOVER

In the Gilgo territory that is covered by our Surfrider stewardship volunteers, we’ve seen the following results:

The 2006 season five nests were established:

• One nest was abandoned by constant harassment.

• Two nests were lost to predators, but luckily were reestablished.

• The other nests fortunately hatched with a total of six surviving chicks.
